BOXING DAY

For all Christmas's stranglehold on the holiday economy, everyone knows the real deals come the day after, with all that overstock most American businesses prayed they wouldn't to shelve. In the States, we experience this as a sort of last-gasp shopping-spree. You know, if you have anything left in the tank. But as the pine scent gives way from excitement to nostalgia, a goodly number of other countries – including our neighbors to the North – are just gearing up.

Boxing Day's origins aren't clear, though it seems most agreed-upon that it has more to do with charity-collection boxes outside churches than the sport concerned with men punching each other's faces. One theory suggests it ties into an old English tradition of giving servants the day after Christmas to be with their families – and sending them with a box of gifts. (Including, perhaps, some leftovers they themselves may have prepared for the prior day's feasting. This was done to placate the servants, and provide everyone a smooth Christmas experience.) Another claims the practice dates back to Roman times, and the boxes placed around were in the service of the Feast of Saint Stephen.

Whatever, however, and whenever, we think it's a neat reversal for most Americans. We focus so intently on Christmas morning, it's easy to forget a whole week has to pass before the next major holiday, and Boxing Day makes a good-spirited kick in the shins to get up and get moving. You know, shake off the hot-buttered rum and third plate of biscochitos you may have consumed at your fiancé's grandma's insistance. Get ready for action.

It's in that spirit that TC decided to take next week off. What's that? We figure better to give ourselves a whole week to relax – because everyone knows you only truly start relaxing around Day 3 or 4 – and get back on the horse first thing Monday. We think of it like sealing Christmas 2011 behind a protective layer of work. Yes, we may be just as tired as you, but we'll draw inspiration our sisters and brothers under that great white Northern blanket. If they can pound the malls, streets and alleyways for great deals, so can we find our desks again, amid the fresh memories of butter, sugar and pine. We're even gonna do it on New Year's Monday. Fair's fair.

WINTER BOOK 2010

You'll have to forgive us that we've been posting a lot of It's that time again!'s lately. We do cherry-pick our posts, but we accept only limited responsibility for the onslaught of awesome that emerges in late Fall. How could we not point approvingly at all of it? It's for good reason that in the season of gratefulness and dashing, masked fundraisers we release our annual Winter Book.

The Winter Book is our rather flattering year-long mirror. Into it we place all the prior year's archives we'd like most to remember, and be remembered for. Brands, books, pamphlets, events, collateral, photographs, a whole lot of love, even last year's Winter Book and more all line up for the slow coffee table reveal. Each December we look up from whatever our current obsession and relax a little, knowing that we filled another book with work that was worthy of it.

As no café worth its organic, unrefined cane sugar shakers doesn't offer sizes, the Winter Book is offered conveniently in two dimensions. The minis pass from a slew of very large machines, but each of the big 'uns comes to you hand-bound. Mmmm, hand-binding.

Please join us in raising a glass of orange-colored citrus (or rum-nog – rum-nog is always acceptable) to conclude 2011 with a nod to 2010, and one eye pointed out the door, down the road, to the next.

UNDERGROUND GUIDE BOOK RELEASE (TOMORROW NIGHT!)

We've brought Adam's An Underground Guide to Alburquerque project to you before. In March they launched a pretty new website, which made available, searchable, and cross-referencedevery review they'd ever published. Due we're sure in no small part to the readership of this blog, they've seen great success so far, hovering around 5000 hits monthly this fall, and growing. And now it's time for the big kahuna, the collector's item – the book itself, in the parlance.

The 6th Edition comes packed with reviews of restaurants (reorganized this year by food type), hardware stores, tattoo parlors, bars low-brow and high-, used bookstores, art galleries, video, and much much more. Following the word-of-mouth explosion that followed the last year's homage to an Albuquerque staple personality, they've peppered the book with treats, from illustrated how-to's to a special activity we're not permitted to disclose till tomorrow night. They're asking for a $10 donation, and are this year selling branded tote-bags (with the top image above), price TBD. Both will be available at tomorrow night's release party, with a special gift over which we've also been sworn to secrecy.

Adam and crew have been working their tails off all year on this beauty. At 92 pages, it's more refined than last year's offering, and he's certain their most attractive, useful and fun book yet. Adam reinvented the brand yet again this year, and TC's Daniel joined ranks as their house photographer. "An extraordinary dedication went into this book," Adam says. "Now it's your turn to take part in the love-fest."

If you're even only considering coming out, they insist you RSVP for the party on their website (and join their mailing list), or for the event alone on facebook. Refreshments from Marble Brewery will be served, beside tasteful selections from two of Albuquerque's premier DJs, and party games, such as Twister: Local Business Edition, which will be played for prizes redeemable at local merchants.

So where can you get one, right? If you're in town, the party's an obvious answer. If you live far, or tomorrow's already irreversibly booked, you can donate for a book and/or a bag on their fancy website, beginning Monday, December 12.

BROOKLYN CHILDREN'S MUSEUM

As the cold deepens around half the world, we naturally become more interested in conservation. It makes good sense; with winter come fewer resources. It's been a good year for TC and green projects and we're excited to roll out another: teachers' and parents' guides to the Brooklyn Chidren's Museum's Green Threads exhibit.

The show is an inventive, fun, and personally relevant look at our daily lives, through several lenses of observation. The teachers' guide invitingly helps educators create interactive lesson plans from the exhibit. The focuses include birds, plants, water, food, energy, waste and more, each loaded with exercises and advice for listless students. Exercises correspond to the major points in the exhibit, and can easily be expanded to daily life beyond the museum.

The parents' guide takes a more intimate approach. The tasks of greening our lives are myriad, and without age limit. While kids can grasp early just how much water they use while the tap runs, or how much garbage they can generate in a day, parents can scan the full pull-out map of Brooklyn's green points of interest. These include bike paths, community gardens, and a host of other already-familiar sights, which taken together are beginning to form the foundation of a sustainable Brooklyn.

TC illustrated and designed the pamphlets, which include maps and and an activity chart to correlate exhibit lessons to NYC Public Schools curricula.

SAYING GRACE

It's official now. We've entered the Holiday Season. Maybe, like us, you're reading the blogs in the early hours of Thanksgiving between clandestine spoonfuls of mashed yams and spiked Snog. (Studies conclude it improves writing quality.) Before the season spirals into the US's most dependable economic stimulus, we thought, perhaps like you, it's time to reflect on the myriad graces we've been dealt. For us, those are our projects. We get so many projects.

Who else gets to design both annual reports and toilet paper? Soft granola bags, glittering temp. tattoos and kids' bandage tins? Branding for pediatricians and green energy-obsessed Texans? Who else gets to photograph weddings, hip hop shows, fundraiser galas, dog collars, a sleep lab, and a statewide brewers' festival in the same stretch? We couldn't say. But we sure are grateful for the opportunity.

So this Thanksgiving, we want to thank each of you for each of your graces. We don't treat those lightly. Every project is an honor – we don't let just any mechanic throw a wrench at our cars, nor just any baker toss just any flour into a wedding cake. We get it, and thank you.

GREEN [ BOOT CAMP ]

The Greening Movement. If you're not itching to install a new sludge-feed direct in your local reservoir (or preternaturally obsessed with Blinky), it's not hard to get behind. Every business worth their salt is doing their part, from memo-heavy offices moving entirely to email to those who can't offering substantial recycling options, and it's a miracle. And those at the leading edge are building operators. Buildings both commercial and residential can draw a shocking amount of power and produce an extraordinary amount of waste for the trouble if their designers and managers aren't careful. We've made our stance known before, and we're always pleased when we get to shove our hat further into the ring.

This weekend in Richmond, TX, our beloved Mark Robinson, who, admittedly, we have to share with Green Power 4 Texas, will be teaching a FREE Greening workshop for Brazos Bend Villa Apartment residents. Learn about about new energy-conserving attic fans and generators on the grounds, how to Greenify your job, lifestyle, and budget. Then eat free local, organic food, help plant a tree which, in concert with several other, should provide more than $100,000 in fruit for residents of the next 20 years, and possibly get on TV. Sounds great, right? Our only complaint NYC and ABQ make this a painfully unGreen drive (let's not talk REG).

TC designed the promo for the event, which we hope will be the huge success Mark, GP4T, and the residents of Brazos Bend deserve.

Likewise, we have to offer huge thanks to the Texas Dept. of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA). It's their investment in these new fans, generators, trees, food, and Mark's time that's making this event possible. Any Saturday morning movement in support of the larger Movement is a big deal, and this is a big-big one. Even if you're not a Brazos Bend resident, the information is no less relevant, and you can take it back to the buildings in your own daily life.

MASQUERADE

Ha! Thought just because you can't see through the gravy haze of Thanksgiving and early Holiday Advertising you were through the Halloween thicket, huh? Well, this week in TC news, we're going on a field trip back in time, to a more innocent, less alarming world. The year? 2011 (gasp). The date? October 29 (heavens!). The hour? 6:30. (Dinner & drinks time!)

Into this other world, we touch down at the Hotel ABQ. The scene: Masquerade, a gorgeous, high-end costume ball fundraiser decorated by Conventions Services of the Southwest. The funds raised were in the service of at-risk youth in the ABQ public school system, to curb bullying and provide "a more positive learning environment." Graciously, they opted for the Costume Ball theme over High School, and put a glamorous face on a good cause. We sent in Daniel to demonstrate for those not in attendance the creative expertise you get when you hire CSS.

Some of our own did make the guest list, including the likes of Max and Mandy Thrasher. Others, well… If you're familiar with the ABQ who's-who, you'd recognize a few faces. If you could see them.

CSS's attention to detail was outstanding. From the exceptional, floating masks to the half-past-twilight lighting, the streamers to the beads, the whole room took on an impossible, otherworldly quality. It may not have been quite the Witching Hour, but magic sure did seem possible.

MELINDA'S NEXT SHOW

It's the season for art openings. All the Summer- and Fall-inspired artists pulling the veils from warm works, set to remind us of everything but the cooling world outside. True, in Summer a comfy crowd spills from the gallery – but as winter arrives, snacks and treats seem more precious, and the warm, welcoming gallery even moreso. So what's happening this week that's got us ready for framed, wall-hung delights? It's the Colored Pencil Society of America local District Chapter's annual show! Yeah, Friday night from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Old Schoolhouse Gallery, north of Cedar Crest, NM. But it gets better: Melinda's in it!

Melinda's no stranger to colored pencil works, taking a Second Place at NM Masterworks for one this Spring. And if you missed one of her more celebrated pieces from that show, you'll be glad to know you can stop kicking yourself. "Catch a Flying Star," along with original work she did for TC on Hey Diddle-Diddle, and new pieces will be on show Friday night. Proud as the Old Schoolhouse is to host this prestigious show, we're even prouder of Melinda's much-deserved place in it.

The show is free, and runs till the 27th, if you can't make it Friday. But we certainly hope you will.

YELLOW DOG HALLOWEEN!

Attention canine-lovers, -bloggers, -aficionados, and those for whom less than the finest counter-cultural leashing system is insufficient: if you don't know Yellow Dog Design, sit right where you are. We've gone on about them before – they design and sell strong, durable leashes any biker gang would be proud to tote – but now they've got a Halloween collection up. And it's perfect. Imagine your pooch's pride on your neighborhood walk. Imagine your own.

Around the office, we've carried on a penny-ante debate: is it the spook-tastic designs, the long-lasting printing, or their strong braiding and substantial feel in the palm that makes them so covetable?

Lynn thinks its the latter, which, with a pit-bull as excitable as yours truly, makes good sense. Adam, blogging understudy, throws his weight behind the printing, which you could depend on through retirement. Britt and Melinda contend it's the design; who else makes pumpkin-cobweb-ghosthouse leashes? (Personally, I think it's the synergy.)

MORE MFA GOODNESS

As the clocks darken earlier, the streets prepare for youngsters baiting tooth-rot and their parents parceling holiday invites, our friends at the Mortgage Finance Authority are wrapping some of their biggest projects of the year. Which, not coincidentally, is great news for a great many New Mexicans as the cold seeps, and kids and families need warm homes to return to with stories and candycorns. But where's the heartwarming if you don't know about all these great developments? It's time for the Fall MFA Newsletter!

From helping an elderly New Mexican man retain his home (with new heating and cooling systems, windows, doors, tile, insulation and siding, plus refurbishing the kitchen and bath, oh my!) to successful partnerships with NM Tribal Housing agencies generating a writeup in August's National Mortage News, MFA's been busy. They've funded approximately $47.1 million for state tribal projects since 1993. They've built or rehabilitated 800 housing units in 17 of our 22 tribes' reservations. Most are multi-family rental units, though some are single-family for-sale homes. It's good, important work.

As ever, TC designed and shot much of the document. We think it's a big deal that an organization like MFA look meaningfully sharp when they promote their activity.

They also put the final staples on these five projects around the state:

In Anthony: CIMARRON II APARTMENTS will provide quality, energy-efficient homes for 84 very low-income families in southern NM.
In Farmington: LA TERRAZA APARTMENTS will keep 72 larger low-income families roofed.
In Los Lunas: HILLTOP APARTMENTS has received $5 million in stimulus funds to rehabilitate. Imagine the possibilities!
In Santa Fe: VILLAGE SAGE, a new community designed for veterans, people with disabilities and formerly homeless individuals, has on-site management, nearly 1/3 of the property is preserved open space, and provides easy, walkable access to trains.
In Albuquerque: The affordable VILLA NUEVA SENIOR APARTMENTS staff help for resident transport, homemaking and healthcare needs, and coordinate resident activities. Villa Nueva is designed to help seniors remain healthy, independent and active, while – and we think this is revolutionary thinking – allowing them to stay close the neighborhoods where many of them grew up.

LOCAL IQ'S NM BREWFEST

Who doesn't want to pass their Saturday afternoon sipping from a crop of the finest local breweries? Even if beer's not your imbibe of choice, the charming coincidence with Albuquerque's virtually unrecognized perfect early Fall weather, and conversely, our internationally renowned Balloon Fiesta, makes it hard to say no. Throw in several local bands (including local design/print impresario Don Mickey's Breaker 19), local food tastings, and non-alcoholic options for the driver in your party, and you've packed enough action for the whole weekend.

Our friends at the Local IQ organized this Brewapalooza, with Chama River, Santa Fe, Turtle Mountain, Marble and Tractor, among several others, topping off six hours of sample glasses. And of course there was more: those who bought a VIP ticket were treated to hourly food-and-beer pairings, food cooked with Odell's legendary brews, and even a tasting of IQ's own nano-brew, whipped up special for the event. Through it all, one had the sense beer's ancient roots were kept close at hand – you might say you could taste them.

Meanwhile, not only was TC photographer Daniel there to capture it, our newest team member Kristopher poured innumerable hours into organizing it. The former enjoyed shooting in the fun, easy-tipping atmosphere, the authentic Brat selection, and IQ's dirndl-clad, stein-bearing mascot. Kristopher's pleased to report the sky was cloudless, the heat pleasant-not-overpowering, and the lines moved fast. What more could you ask for on an October Saturday? You didn't even have to miss the game.

GLITTER-TOOS

Remember in middle school (or even grammar school?) when glitter marked all the cool kids' notebooks like each of them had been specifically blessed with fairy dust? Keep thinking back: there was only one cooler, more establishing adornment you could sport: the temporary tattoo. (Incidentally, you know this is true of college and The Real World, don't deny.)

So what if someone combined them? Surely, the bearer of such magic could stop bullies, could leap small piles of textbooks in a single bound. Well, Glitter-Toos is such a pair of magicians, and we, their branding house. GT was founded last year by an artist and a skin care specialist. They started with children parties and charity events, grew into Corporate and Sporting Events – and now, because they love you, Do-it-Yourself Retail Kits.

BRITT GETS HITCHED!

Britt Martinez is a lot of things: smart, thoughtful, funny, quite a designer, the best Team Glue in the biz, and now, married. Her wonderful beau Isaah is an office favorite (whom we see far too little of), and after years of courtship, their union just made extraordinary sense. That said, she'll likely always be a Martinez to us.

In the spirit of so many things TC, hers was a team wedding. Britt put her project management skills to excellent use, planning for nearly 300 guests, designing heaps of collateral materials, and putting her team to good use.

At the reception, Lynn and Melinda were both spotted cutting rugs (probably argyle), and Daniel was there to capture the whole spinning eureka. (It's little-known, but put the Beastie Boys on the dance floor, and Platow's there like a shot.)

We may post party photos, so you, who were ostensibly not at the festivities, can enjoy the whole spinning eureka, too. But today, we thought we'd ease you in with the small, profound happinesses of preparation.

We wish the newlyweds the greatest joy, here, and in the years to come.

WE'RE TEN!

It's been a long, delicious haul through the single digits, and it's our birthday! We've learned a lot over the last decade, made a lot of friends, moved around the country and the world, and found our… identity.

It was with no more than laptops and tiny Wacom tablets (appropriate for our tiny hands) we began the TC odyssey in an e-cafe in NYC's East Village. When the weather was bad, or the eats were good, we'd venture to other internet-bearing restaurants.

And recall, in 2001, this was far from today's norm. Not to shine our nails too much, but at the start of the 2000s, the notion of a mobile, internet-accessible office was still a fresh idea. A little scary. But with desk space, electricity, ethernet cables, and Mark Robinson our only client, we staked an office. Nowadays, with deepening roots in Albuquerque and Regensberg, and a team of 17 members (plus dog), it tickles us CMYK to reflect on how far we've come.

The team back then consisted of only one illustrator, one designer, and one photographer – working over coffee. (Private meetings occurred at the nearby Wendy's.) We had occasion to remember those days recently, when our building's Internet service went down and we regrouped within the hour at our much-beloved Napoli Coffee.

So if you're near a glass, and want to raise it in our honor, please do. Particularly, as we're just returned from a glorious, sun-flooded vacation, and will be ploughing through work till our next school vacation.

TEAM KUDOS: GOURMET BOOK DESIGN

In the spirit of showing off our team's talents, in the last year we've trotted out all manner of work by Daniel, our chief photographer, and Melinda, our prize illustrator. Today, it's time to feature the work of our copy-guy, Adam.

When he's not ghost-writing this very blog (don't tell the dog), Adam carries on as Gourmet Book Design. He ran a small poetry press for nine years, and now designs for print, hand-binds books, oversees printing, writes copy, and edits text both for marketing and creative output. He also publishes, under his Gourmet Books imprint, An Underground Guide to Alburquerque, which we've mentioned here before, and blogs about writing his experimental novel, The Dredge Cycle. This makes him a very busy Adam, indeed.

Of course, being a print designer, Adam hired Daniel to photograph his portfolio a while back. Daniel, being Daniel, obliged, and Adam relaunched his website last month, beaming ear-to-ear.

We think you'll find something that tickles your fancy among the 17 projects he's posted so far. He's adding more as he finds time amid his myriad projects and TC responsibilities. Keep your eye on it in this Fall!

SWEET SWEET LABOR DAY AVAILABILITY

Suddenly, it's the beginning of September, again. And like everyone, we're faced with the daunting responsibility of taking a day off.

It's like this: we love what we do. We love doing it so much it's a little hard to put the laptop down. So this Labor Day, we'll be working… on relaxing. This means our phones will rest five feet away – on a counter, end table, or beside one of those fine signature drinks of the Southwest. This is a marked improvement on last year's in-hand-but-not-in-ear approach.

We encourage you to experiment with relaxing along with us… and we know just how likely that sounds. If you must work – and we salute you for it – and you must call, know that we'll pick up. (We'll even be in a state to answer cogently!) It may just take a moment longer than usual for us to locate the ring.

TANGERINE VACATION

It's that magic time of year again, when Christmas is lodged between memory and dream, Congress is quiet, and half of our clients are relaxing in the Hamptons. So we figured, what better time to take a break, ourselves? Indeed, we decided,

TC ABQ will take September 12-16
for ourselves. (ALL OF US)

But being a motley team of overdrive creatives, we're of course keeping just as busy. Britt will be swooning into her Honeymoon (more on the wedding in the coming weeks). Joan will be overseas. Joanna will be deep into another semester of studies. Adam will be prepping for the cross-country trip of a lifetime. Lynn will probably throw one more of those parties the neighborhood recalls fondly for months. Daniel will be on location far far away. Josh will be celebrating his little sister's Bat Mitzvah in California. And Melinda will be drawing, drawing, drawing… all day, all day, all day. (all others are going dark).

So though none of us is studied in the delicate science of fishing – who knows? Maybe someone will return for our Tuesday meeting on September 20th with a bass the size of a four-year-old, a few fresh lemons, and the will to grill. Short of that, we'll count on a refreshed perspective, and the hunger for collaboration that only reveals itself among folks who love one another's company.

THE SUMMER'S BEST BIOPICS

Our ABQ team has seen some new faces and departures in recent years. With the arrival of our newest team member, Kristopher Legits, we thought now an excellent time to take new bio photos. Cue fun.

Home-buying is a complicated venture. Mortgage calculations to rebates to contractors' quotes on Green retrofitting, there's a lot to consider, much of it foreign to the average consumer. Thankfully, if you're in New Mexico, the Mortgage Finance Authority once more has you covered.

This helpful guide provides readers with MFA-approved lenders, contact information for different housing-related organizations – home rehabilitation to weatherization to emergency shelters – and explanations of MFA housing programs.

A few of the latter include Mortgage$aver, a 30-year fixed below-market rate mortgage loan for first-time low-to-medium income buyers, and Energy$avers, below-market interest rate loans for energy efficiency improvements. We think that's pretty awesome.

TC designed the directory for clarity and ease of navigation, balancing MFA's brand with fast access to useful information. The directory is available for download, and in their offices in downtown Albuquerque.

MEET BRYCON

If you're in the Southwest and need something big built, you've probably already heard of BRYCON. In fact, even if that's not you, you've probably heard of them, anyway (because you religiously read our blog!). They're one of the most respected construction firms in the region, and were in need of a brochure to highlight some of that well-earned expertise.

BRYCON'S renowned as one of the safest contractors in the Southwest, with an EMR of 0.60, and their more than 500 workers are licensed through the company in in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah.

We thought tabs would be the most efficient and intuitive way to navigate the information. They also reflect the elegance BRYCON shows in their work.

And of course they know the value of great photography in marketing.

In 2010, they were honored with the Ethics in Business Award from the University of New Mexico’s Anderson School of Management and the Samaritan Counseling Center. MAX THRASHER'S GETTING MARRIED!

We met Max Thrasher, CPA when we moved to the iQ building in early 2010; he works across the hall. With proximity came friendship. And then we met his "her:" Mandy Ferguson. Beautiful, cheerful, kind – a perfect match for Max – we were thrilled to hear they were absconding to marry in Greece. Though we didn't receive all-expense Mediterranean travel packages (we don't forget, Max), we were invited to their stateside reception (which we won't soon forget).

Greek food, portions, dancing and colors exploded through the Factory on Fifth space in north Downtown ABQ. It was a lovely, sumptuous, magic-tinted evening. And we think our DP Daniel teased that magic from the air.

Says Daniel: "It was a fun, colorful celebration of a couple truly in love, and a pleasure to photograph. Weddings and receptions like this one remind me how privileged I am to join a couple's close family and friends in celebrating their commitment."

Congratulations to Max and Mandy. We wish you further travels, nuptials and maybe another honeymoon, relaxing as luminous as the night you shared with us here. We're sure they will be. We couldn't imagine two people better suited to it.

WIFI ROOTS

A few choice words to start with: Flexible. Comfortable. Internet. Proud.

Last week, the Internet dropped in our Albuquerque building. It's not unfathomable that for many a design group, this means productivity-collapse. But we've got some practice with this, and less than an hour passed before we were seated comfortably in a wash of WiFi – at Napoli Coffee. Daniel was there – with camera, of course.

A decade ago, when TC was yet the suddenly-actualizing dream of a talented few NYC designers, we met only in coffee shops. (There was the odd retreat to the nearby Wendy's, when Lynn and Joan needed a private office. That did happen. But mostly coffee shops. Hence our name.) We gathered with warm mugs and local decor until 2003, until we could afford an office.

Perhaps others would have moved somewhere voluminous, with aspirations of filling a whole café. But we saw value in low overhead – passing the savings to our clients, and using only what we needed. That's because our values have remained unbroken: take care of our clients, do good work, and work as a team. Though our prices have risen through the years, as have our ranks and talents – and we have clients still from Day One. We still use only what we need, still do it all as a team, still put our utterly awesome clients first.

And sometimes things break, like building-wide Internet access. With a good team, contingency is easy. Especially when Napoli's around to let us take over the front half of their shop! Special thanks to Liz Robertson, who made us feel instantly at home.

True to our roots, we've stayed flexible. It'll take more than an Internet blackout to stop team TC. (And the bike shop next door makes a fine Wendy's in a pinch.)

It's no secret here we're fans of the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority. Loyal readers may remember a few months back, when we featured MFA's winter success insulating homes and renovating dilapidated properties.

Well, strap in for more good news. Their 2010 State of Housing report, which we've been hard at work on, has returned from the printer. And we're here to tell you, without a hint of hubris, it'll make other annual reports weak in the knees.

In part, that's due to great organization in a great organization. In part, it's due to very strong writing: sober analysis explains New Mexico's housing market status – which is better than many other states – clearly and accessibly. Team photography, design and copyediting from our end rounds out the envy.

Things have to change. Even good things. It's in the contract.

After years of bar-none excellent invoicing and laughter-filled office drop-ins, our Finance Manager, Yvonne Bryan, is relocating to sunny California. We considered asking why, then considered this a fundamentally unnecessary question.

A few weeks back some of the ABQ team treated her to a birthday/send-off lunch. The office is already lonelier for her absence. Of course we expect she'll miss us, too, amid the surfing, quality-testing avocado appetizers, and sifting her mail from offers of plastic surgery.

But worry not, those of you playing at home! Her invoices will (most likely) not begin with that time-honored So-Cal motto, "Like, oh my God, you're totally past Net 30…" She isn't going anywhere, if you don't count the traffic, ocean, and Austrian-accented governator. Her computer still hums cheerfully in our office. She still Skypes in to say hello. Her phone number remains (505) 886-1242, and her email faithfully yvonne at tangerinecafe dot com.

We love, love, love her, and wish her short commutes, excellent seafood, and all the best adventures.

No one at TC feels better about a job than when receiving kind words for work well done. You might say it's our adrenaline; not only do we think our clients are the best going, it's their happiness which keeps us going. We keep them all in our studio, and remind ourselves with them often.

It's been a bustling time for our photography department, with shoots for the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority, Johnny Lee's Asian Kitchen, and Senior Photos. But this pales to the most important documentation work of our young DP's career: Herodotus Perfectness. Indeed, the very keeper of this blog-flame has been also busy lately, now modeling for Yellow Dog Design.

Yellow Dog isn't your grandma's dogwear company (unless she's a Hell's Angel). From biker tattoos to "Best Dog Ever" to "I luv my dog" – which even features a nod to our mascot – they deliver the canine chic. Better still, they sell designs in full sets: collar, leash and harness, so there's no excuse not to accessorize your pooch.

As summer approaches and a new generation of high school graduates forages into the world, we got to thinking about the expectant juniors in their last summer before senior year. It's a loaded time, when teenagers begin the transition into adulthood. We got to thinking about how those senior photos always seem a bit forced, a bit pre-fab, missing excitement they're intended to capture.

Lucky us, we've got a brilliant photography department, which also got us to thinking. So Tangerine Café is now offering a selection of Senior Photo packages. Each shoot is casual or formal to taste, on-location, and intended to capture your budding senior at the tail of her or his teenage years.

JOHNNY LEE'S ASIAN KITCHEN

Sometimes you need to eat where the owner remembers your name. And your last order. Johnny and his wife (we know her as Tweety) run one of the sweetest, most genuine eateries in Albuquerque. Truly earning the "Asian" of their name, they serve up Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese effortlessly, and with a price-to-portion (and quality!) ratio that'll have you wondering how they make rent.

Daniel, our Director of Photography, went over recently for a promotional shoot. As we've been staring at it daily, and accordingly rearranging lunch plans, we feel you should, too.

The feel is warm and friendly (Johnny and Tweety chatted Daniel up through the shoot), and the walls are dotted with tasteful, interesting art. House specialties include Johnny's Iced Tea – think magical Thai Iced Tea – and even a breakfast burrito – Johnny-style.

SPRING BRINGS MFA SUCCESS STORIES

As you know, we’ve been working with the NM Mortgage Finance Authority (MFA) for some time. They’ll shortly be sending out their TC-designed and -copyedited Spring 2011 newsletter. In a time when economic uncertainty almost certainly means housing uncertainty, it’s relieving to see an organization wracking up success stories. Here are a few of our favorites.

Roberta Wilson’s Albuquerque home had no insulation. Hard to believe, and you might think we’re exaggerating, but before MFA and their partner, Central New Mexico Housing Corporation (CNMHC), weatherized Roberta’s house, it averaged just 42° in winter. The Salvation Army referred Roberta was MFA, who with CNMHC staff conducted an energy audit. The crew insulated, sealed air leaks in the walls, attic and floor, then patched and retextured the holes they’d made for insulation. Pretty great, huh?

South of Albuquerque, for 48 years Regina and Edwin Griego have made their home in a stately stone and brick house in a historic Belen neighborhood. A few years back, the La Hacienda Apartments, across from the Griegos, began a slow decline. Regular drug use and violence were becoming commonplace at their once-sought-after neighbor. This prompted Regina to launch a campaign encouraging the city to pull La Hacienda from its troubles. Several months later, a partnership among the city of Belen, MFA and YES Housing formed to renovate the property. 22 units will receive $65,000 in repair and energy efficiency upgrades that include new doors, windows, floors, hot water heaters, and cabinets.

We couldn’t be prouder of MFA’s continuing role in the housing of New Mexicans, and we thank them for the opportunity to help them tell everyone about it.

AN UNDERGROUND GUIDE TO ALBURQUERQUE

If you're in the ABQ-area, you might have seen An Underground Guide to Alburquerque. It's an annual publication dedicated to helping people visiting, moving to, and living in Albuquerque. The reviews are often hilariously honest, and written by anyone who's patronized a given business 3+ times. The book, while hard to come by (we did say it's underground), is often an experimental production, using unusual papers and materials as relevant. ABQ team members Adam and Daniel act as publisher/designer/editor and house photographer, respectively.

The Guide relaunched their website last month, dramatically increasing access to reviews and offering new photography to help consumers find and bond with local establishments. The staff were beyond excited to involve Daniel, as he brings high production values with his contagious enthusiasm, and it was easy to see how great photography would benefit business and consumer alike. Says co-founder Eric Bodwell, "Daniel captures the sense of a place, which is what we try to do with every review. We want you to feel like you've already eaten there by the time you go in." There's no denying reviews aided by Daniel's lens.

Adam, meanwhile, has had a hand in every review since co-founding the Guide in 2005. He finds it keeps his editing skills sharp, stripping the unnecessary to find precisely the flavors and details in other people's words. He thinks the site is raising the bar – not just for the book, but for all offerings in the genre: "Our writers (you could be one!) and photographer bring astonishing depth to more hole-in-the-walls than anything I've ever seen in a city guide, be it print or online."

HALCOM COUNSULTING

If you have any experience with construction you've likely heard of LEED Certification. Delivered by the US Green Building Council, it's becoming known as a major step in Greening business, and Halcom Consulting is at the forefront of the field, helping architects and builders achieve that coveted seal.

For the unfamiliar, here's a quick-n-dirty summary, courtesy of the Halcom site:

LEED for New Construction is a performance-oriented rating system where building projects earn points for satisfying criteria designed to address specific environmental impacts inherent in the design, construction, operations and management of a building. [It's] organized into five environmental categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality. An additional category, Innovation and Design, awards points to LEED projects that develop new solutions, employ new technologies, educate, or realize exemplary performance in another area.

This month Kirtland Air Force Base unveils its first LEED Silver building, the Battlespace Environment Laboratory, guided toward certified status by Halcom Consulting. Of course, no one would know the building is certified if you didn't tell them, so we designed the lobby sign announcing their commitment to a Greener footprint. The building opens grandly at the end of the month.

From their website:

"The Battlespace Environment Division in the Air Force Research Laboratory's Space Vehicles Directorate represents the USAF expertise on the space and upper atmosphere environment and its effects on space systems and on command, control, communications, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems."

The building approximately contains 145,000 square feet of laboratory and administrative space, optimized for the employees' experience and minimal environmental impact.

MASTERWORKS NM: THE SEQUEL

Last week we told you that Melinda's been greeting success with all three of her submissions accepted to the Masterworks NM show. Well, we have news. At last Friday's opening reception and awards ceremony, she took 2nd place for "Massive Sky, Sandias," in the Colored Pencil Miniatures category!

Melinda says "Massive Sky, Sandias" also happens to be her favorite of the three pieces. Evidently, the judges were in agreement.

Meanwhile, it's no surprise to us she took honors, but unexpected (and good for you): none of her pieces have yet sold. The show stays up until April 29. Go see it if you haven't yet, and get yourself a miniature before they're all gone! You can make inquiries and get in touch to arrange payments through her blog or the TC website.

MASTERWORKS NM

Melinda has been busy wracking up honors again. This year, she prepared three pieces for the Masterworks NM show, all miniatures, and all accepted! Their definition of a miniature: "Fine art on a small scale with minute attention to detail, details which can sustain close inspection or magnification without loss." The rules are very particular, and as she put it, the goal is to "portray a sense of 'miniature,' as opposed to a 'small picture.'" Given her success at last year's show (selling two pieces), we think Melinda's up the challenge – and the judges appear to, too. All three of her submissions were accepted!

To make the piece entirely miniature, she placed it "directly in the frame as if it was an epic grand-scale landscape in oil. My impression of massiveness carried through to the title in the end - I really loved the idea of naming this tiny piece 'massive.'"

Maybe what's most impressive about these three pieces is their variety. Content and style, traditional to urban, they each speak differently of some form of miniaturization.

Masterworks NM opens April 1 (tomorrow night!) at 5PM. The awards ceremony starts at 7:00. It's open to the public and admission is free (though ExpoNM charges for parking). If you're lucky, you might be able to pick up one of these little beauties before someone else does.

From character design for a comic chronicling the adventures of a certain late-90s alterna-rock band to Ouchies Bandage packaging, local ABQ brand implementation and development to logos, posters and newsletters for clients across nine states, we think it gorgeously showcases our unique range of talents.

Each large book is hand-bound (we're not sure about the minis) and opens with the awesome prowess of a coffee-table volume. We couldn't be prouder of our big team, composed of many smaller, interlocking teams, nor more grateful for our wonderful clients. BRYCON CONSTRUCTION

We've met few who don't enjoy that quiet time, when after the day's responsibilities they receive a pillow, sheets, and time to recharge. Sleep is so fundamental to our experience, it's hard to imagine not being able to enjoy it.

Brycon Construction recently built the Christus St. Vincent Regional Sleep Center, a top-notch facility for treatment of sleep disorders. And we're here to tell you, the place looks gorgeous.

Theres's something strangely – one might say almost unconsciously – settling in the feel of the place, from the well-lit entrance to the bedrooms, even the monitoring rooms. And our photographer Daniel Hulsbos captures it pitch-perfect.

Christus St. Vincent chose Brycon for their sleep center, as well as an extensive remodel, for their expertise. We suspect they're getting the same classy treatment we've seen in our time with Brycon. Says Daniel of Charlotte Lane, on this shoot: "Charlotte was great to work with. Her professional, direct, and laid-back attitude made her very enjoyable to be around. I very much look forward to working with her, and Brycon."

We've known for some time we love our clients. They're the best in three countries. We tried an office exercise this week to figure, literally and otherwise, where we'd be without them. The expression on each team member's face was uniformly not Valentines-appropriate. Some of saw ourselves playing chess with sanity on the production line; others had visions of destitution, begging for our old jobs at the cellophane factory.

So, inspired by both the holiday and the miraculous survival of a dear client in a harrowing car crash, we're dedicating this week to our you. That we get to come to work for you makes an easy draw from be, and we're grateful. Thank you each for your great projects, ideas, smiles and attitudes.

Here's to a brilliant 2010, and a shining 2011.

THE QUIET SIDE

Do you know the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority's work? You probably do. They've been helping down-and-out folks find homes for over 35 years.

Phillip Elliot's seen a rough life. Drugs to jail time, he's been around the block. But with nine years clean behind him, and a recent place to call home, he's beginning the awe-inspiring climb back to stability, and with a great attitude. Just look at that smirk.

Daniel Hulsbos, our photographer, offers this about Phillip: "It is always inspiring to see those less fortunate doing what they can to get their lives back on track, and making the most of things. Also, it tends to give me a little perspective on my own 'problems.' It makes me realize how fortunate I am to be where I am."

Phillip's also an avid bible-reader.

And the man's not without humor. When MFA asked when we could come shoot, he replied his schedule's pretty open, actually; he could fit us in between the President and Donald Trump.

This week in NYC has been the New York International Gift Fair, and our beloved Ouchies was quite a hit. Were you there? We'd love to see your photos, if you'll share!

We designed and helped install the exhibition booth. Aside from all the buzz over the space, we saw a little bit of everyone whenever bandages were needed. Which we think is hilarious.

Surprise, surprise, all three of Melinda Beavers' colored pencil miniature submissions have been accepted into MasterWorks of New Mexico, theTwelfth Annual Fine Art Show.

(This is no surprise to those that know her work. She is positively brilliant.)

While we were not officially notified of the award, she was told that she MUST attend the reception on Friday evening.

Meanwhile, we've heard through the grapevine that she has been awarded first in the colored pencil category. :)

Good morning Lynn, hope all is well with you! Just wanted to pass a pic that one of my customers took of me in Whole Foods Market this week. This is the new Parklane Store, which is quite classy. Customers walk around with wine glasses as they select purchases of truly devine foods. It has been opened for exactly one week today.

On last Monday, this location started out with 9 cases of THE ALL-NATURAL-HEALTHY COOKIE, which consist of 36 cookies per case. By Wednesday at 1:12 PM, the store had completely run out product. So, my first special order was taken now in the amount of 15 cases. By late Sunday evening, the shelves once again were empty. This morning, the store ordered 30 cases just to be sure. They need half of them by 2 PM today, I'm geared up and ready.

I was informed by the store manager that before THE ALL-NATURAL-HEALTHY COOKIE came to their store, the Athlete's Choice was the best seller, selling at a rate of 30 to 35 cookies daily at their largest store in the area. THE ALL-NATURAL-HEALTHY COOKIE is selling at a rate of 25 cookies per hour and counting as of 5PM yesterday. I feel overwhelming blessed, in fact, I know that I am!!!!

We proudly announce that the NEW OUCHIES are now available!

Now that the product has been officially released by our client, Ouchies - we can go ahead and blog our hearts out about how much fun we've been having.

What did we do? We have helped to redesign the three original products in the original "Ouchies" line. (See above - For Boyz, For Girlz and Make-Your-Own) and created a line of famously fabulous Little Miss and Mr. Men products as well! (see below)

Not only did we get to delve into the packaging, but the website bandages too! (It's times like these that you love loving your job)

Why are we blogging about TASTE today?

Well, simply put, they have been such a pleasure to work with. The above brochure was created under a tight deadline. It was originally requested to be a tri-fold brochure, and we proposed a change.

TASTE is unique, and exceptional. All of their collateral should follow suit. So we created a 3 panel piece, using toothy paper and large fields of color to accentuate the TASTE brand while giving the viewer a feel for the quality TASTE can offer.

Cottonwood Balloon Breakfast

For nine days in October, the New Mexico skies are painted as hundreds of balloons lift off from Albuquerque's Balloon Fiesta Park. The annual Balloon Fiesta, is Albuquerque's biggest public event, by far. It's always an exciting time of year for those of us that live here.

Cottonwood Printing Co. is comfortably situated out by Balloon Fiesta Park and holds a private breakfast one morning during the week, for viewing the Mass Ascension – a launch of all the participating balloons, a major feature of Balloon Fiesta since its earliest days. In honor of this event, each year Cottonwood prints a poster and gives it away to clients and local businesses to promote the event. This year, TC was given the opportunity to work on this poster. Melinda Beavers did a positively fabulous job in doing so.

As a bonus, has printed the black & white image as a coloring page give away to children attending the event.

La Cenerentola - Oct 3, 9 & 11

This season, Opera Southwest presents

La Cenerentola - The Tale of Cenerentola (Cinderella)

Rossini's version of a classic fairytale is filled with infectious bel canto musical thrills. Presented at the architectural gem, Kimo Theatre, listen and watch as the gentle Cenerentola suffers the cruelty of her heartless but hilariously funny step-family. Revel as the neglected maiden falls in love with her Prince who is disguised as his own servant. No mice, pumpkins, glass slippers or magic here, the well-known outcome is orchestrated by the Prince's wise mentor with a pair of bracelets to identify the lovers. Delight in this comedy where forgiveness and benevolence triumph over cruelty and greed.

This architectural gem earned its unusual name when Isleta Pueblo governor, Pablo Abeita, suggested KiMo, which means "king of its kind" The theater's pueblo/deco architectural style and lavish interior murals make it a true picture palace. Built in 1927 it was one of the main stopping centers during the glory days of Route 66 (Central Avenue). Young entertainers who graced its stage included the likes of Vivian Vance, Gloria Swanson, Tom Mix and Ginger Rogers. The KiMo seats 700 comfortably with an orchestra pit for 30-40 musicians.
